Spirals of time

SONY DSC

An ashen face and tried eyes, swollen with the weight of un-shed tears gaze at the winding track, now overgrown by weeds.

In her minds eye she can see the spirals of smoke announcing the arrival of a much awaited train.

She can feel white droplets of dancing mist caress her face.

Her eyes keep searching for that familiar face, the love of her life.

Raven black hair have turned to snowy white- a lifetime of waiting.

Family

In a small sleepy town a ninth grader happily strings a makeshift musical instrument from bamboo sticks. Faint notes waft to entertain prospective buyers as her mother painstakingly crafts basket after basket for sale at the village market.

Amidst the hustle bustle of a metropolis, in a dark shady lane behind the school compound, a seventh grader has her first taste of a cigarette and alcohol on a dare from her peers.

Both come from broken homes.

I wonder what sets them apart?

The cities they belong to, their upbringing, family circumstances or their friends?

Winter longings

“Whooops”, screamed Nita as she grabbed the wrought iron railing just in time to save herself from stumbling on the snow beginning to freeze rapidly outside her doorway.
The winter seemed endless. The never ending harsh, bitter winds chilled her to the bone. She gazed longingly at the nonexistent ball of fire hidden by constant grey skies and wished for the glorious summer days and some sunshine.
As her black hair turned to white, over the years she longed to move to warmer climes.
It was her love for the mountains that won over each time and thus life continued.

Five Sentence Fiction- Departure

Five Sentence Fiction – Departure

Ravi stopped for a moment, taking a deep breath as he headed toward the departure gate, taking in the majestic airplane taking off overhead.

His mind full of turmoil, he clutched his only possession, his  frayed grey overnight bag tighter.

Life had changed in an instant irrevocably with the bankruptcy, but for better or worse, only time would tell.

Eyes closed, he then visualized the day he landed in the country of his dreams, eager to make a name for himself.

Today, as he departed from the land he called home for the past 30 years, he reflected on the changes, the airport, his circumstances, the emptiness that had replaced joy and wondered  whether a fresh start was even possible at his age?
